New word acquisition using subword modeling
In this paper, we use subword modeling to learn the pronunciations and spellings of new words. The subwords are generated with a context-free grammar, and are intermediate units between phonemes and syllables. We first evaluate the effectiveness of the subword model in automatically generating the spelling and pronunciation of new words. Then the subword model is embedded in a multi-stage recog...
متن کاملOffline handwritten word recognition using a hybrid neural network and hidden Markov model
This paper describes an approach to combine neural network (NN) and Hidden Markov models (HMM) for solving handwritten word recognition problem. The preprocessing involves generating a segmentation graph that describes all possible ways to segment a word into letters. To recognize a word, the NN computes the observation probabilities for each letter hypothesis in the segmentation graph. The HMM...
متن کاملImproved Hidden Markov Models Speech Recognition Using Radial Basis Function Networks
A high performance speaker-independent isolated-word hybrid speech recognizer was developed which combines Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) and Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural networks. In recognition experiments using a speaker-independent E-set database, the hybrid recognizer had an error rate of 11.5% compared to 15.7% for the robust unimodal Gaussian HMM recognizer upon which the hybrid syste...

متن کاملLinguistically-motivated sub-word modeling with applications to speech recognition
Despite the proliferation of speech-enabled applications and devices, speech-driven human-machine interaction still faces several challenges. One of theses issues is the new word or the out-of-vocabulary (OOV) problem, which occurs when the underlying automatic speech recognizer (ASR) encounters a word it does not ”know”. With ASR being deployed in constantly evolving domains such as restaurant...
